Hematologists diagnose and manage a wide variety of diseases, both benign (non-cancerous) and malignant. These may involve one or more of the three main blood cell lines: red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). However, not all blood disorders require treatment.

Hematology Services at Hygeia Include:

Red Blood Cell Disorders & Anemia
Conditions in which red blood cell count or hemoglobin levels drop below normal. These include iron deficiency anemia, B12 and folic acid deficiency anemia, anemia of chronic disease, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and other inherited or acquired red cell disorders.

White Blood Cell Disorders
These involve abnormalities in leukocytes, which are responsible for immune defense. Conditions include leukemias (acute and chronic), polycythemia vera, and myelodysplastic syndromes.

Platelet Disorders
Conditions affecting platelets, responsible for blood clotting. These include thrombocytopenia (low platelets) seen in conditions like ITP, TTP, DIC, and thrombocytosis (high platelets), as in essential thrombocythemia.

Coagulation and Thrombosis Disorders
When the blood has difficulty clotting or forms clots too easily. Common disorders include Hemophilia A and B, von Willebrand disease, Factor V Leiden, MTHFR mutations, and others.
