IVF Fertility Clinic

The Hygeia Tirana Fertility Clinic is the first world-class fertility clinic in the country and the only one certified for the quality of its services by the international organization TEMOS “Quality in Reproductive Health”. The team of international evaluators awarded the Hygeia Fertility Clinic the TEMOS Certificate, with the highest grade “A”, for both medical and non-medical services, as well as for the ethics of the care provided.

The Hygeia Fertility Clinic and its staff are committed to offering the highest level of professional care and treatment, as well as emotional support, for all couples — both women and men — who are pursuing their greatest dream: parenthood. The professional and experienced team of Greek and Albanian doctors, in close collaboration with support staff (nurses and secretaries), provides a complete service to couples — starting with identifying the causes of infertility, whether male or female, and then determining a personalized and adequate medical treatment plan for each couple, with the sole goal of achieving optimal results. Treatment programs in our Clinic are supported by cutting-edge Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and a highly advanced and modern Embryology Laboratory.

For each treatment applied, e.g., IUI, IVF, etc., couples are given full information about the procedure, chances of pregnancy, and are offered the opportunity to ask questions about treatment, tests, medications, how to take them, and anything else they wish to know before taking any steps in this process.

Before and during treatment, couples are asked to familiarize themselves in advance with the respective procedures, the time required for them, the planning involved, and any other details that help them make informed decisions — a process that is always assisted by our specialized staff. Since its founding, the Hygeia Fertility Clinic has recorded a series of successes, helping many couples realize their dream of becoming parents. Today, we can proudly say we are one of the clinics with the highest success rates in the country — a full 65%.

IUI – Intra Uterine Insemination

IUI is a procedure that involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. The procedure is done by introducing a prepared amount of the husband’s sperm, processed using specialized techniques in the andrology lab, into the uterus through a catheter. This is synchronized with ovulation (the woman’s egg release). The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm reaching the Fallopian tubes — the meeting point with the egg.

“Classic” Fertilization or ICSI – Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

For patients who have not succeeded with medications or IUI, IVF is performed.

There are two methods of fertilizing the egg: Classic fertilization and ICSI. Depending on the cause of infertility, one of these techniques is chosen. At Hygeia Hospital, we successfully use both techniques, with great satisfaction, achieving impressive results even for couples who had failed at other centers for years.

Classic fertilization – under specific conditions, the egg and a set quantity of sperm are combined, and the egg selects the best sperm. This technique simulates natural fertilization. It is most commonly used for blocked Fallopian tubes or unexplained infertility.

ICSI – Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is an IVF procedure where a sperm cell is directly injected into the egg. Discovered in the early 1990s, this technique quickly spread worldwide.

PGD – Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis

We perform all assisted reproduction procedures, including PGD. This involves removing one or more nuclei from eggs (polar bodies) or embryos (blastomeres or trophectoderm cells) for genetic testing before transfer. This allows us to identify healthy embryos and avoid transferring those with genetic abnormalities. Indications include:

  • Repeated miscarriages
  • Failed IVF cycles (>2)
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Advanced maternal age
  • History of chromosomal anomalies in pregnancies or children
  • Chromosomal translocations
  • Family history of X-linked diseases
  • Single-gene disorders
  • Structural chromosomal abnormalities

PESA – Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration

TESE – Testicular Sperm Extraction (biopsy)

Until recently, azoospermic men (no sperm in ejaculate) had few options. But with TESE or TESA techniques, sperm can be retrieved from testicular tissue. If sperm are found, the couple can try to conceive genetically using ICSI. At Hygeia, we are proud to have one of the first teams worldwide to successfully perform these methods.

Sperm/Egg Donation

If no sperm is found even after biopsy, donor sperm can be used. Likewise, women who cannot produce eggs may benefit from egg donation. In our Clinic, we boast an 80% success rate for egg donor cases, thanks to careful recipient preparation.

Strict application of these techniques, high success rates, and growing trust from couples inspire us to constantly improve and meet patient expectations.

Starting February 13, Hygeia Fertility Clinic offers all women who achieve pregnancy through IVF a 50% discount on childbirth costs, bringing the dream of parenthood even closer — because “Your Dream, Our Mission.”

Semen Analysis

Semen analysis is the primary test requested for men to evaluate sperm count and quality. Guidelines for performing the test:

  1. 3–5 days of sexual abstinence
  2. No perfume use on test day
  3. Preferably collected in the hospital, or brought in within 30–45 minutes if done at home

This test evaluates sperm count, motility, morphology, clumping, and possible infection signs. It is simple and vital to determine male infertility factors.
