Urology
Urology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the urinary tract in both males and females, as well as the male reproductive system. This includes the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, testicles, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate, and penis.
The outstanding technology in Urology offered by the Urology Department at “Hygeia” Hospital in Tirana includes the latest surgical developments for performing minimally invasive operations assisted by laser and real-time ultrasound, as well as fiber-optic endoscopic procedures in pediatric urological surgery, endourology, female urology, urologic oncology, neuro-urology, andrology, reconstructive urology, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, retrograde intrarenal surgery for kidney stones, and more.
The Urologic Surgery team is led by the well-known and experienced Dr. Spyridon Gouvalis, with extensive expertise in oncological and reconstructive urology. He collaborates closely with the entire department staff to successfully perform all urological procedures, giving maximum priority to patient care before and after every procedure. Kidney or renal cancer: The surgery typically involves the removal of the entire kidney and is among the most common treatments. However, in most cases at our hospital, the tumor is removed by performing a partial nephrectomy, preserving the healthy portion of the kidney.
Prostate cancer: The standard approach is radical prostatectomy, meaning the complete removal of the prostate gland, seminal vesicles, and vas deferens using a nerve-sparing technique. A high percentage of prostate cancer patients regain continence and sexual function within 6–12 months after surgery.
Bladder cancer: Cystectomy is the surgical technique that involves the partial or radical removal of the urinary bladder. In radical cystectomy, the main urinary diversion techniques used in our department include the ileal conduit, continent reservoir formations, and neobladder replacements using intestinal segments.
